Tesla Paint Shop — Wrap Format & Install Guide
Paint Shop is the Toybox feature that lets a Tesla wear your own design: upload a wrap image and it appears on the car. The catch is the format — Tesla accepts exactly one shape of file, and most images from the internet don't fit it. This guide covers the rules, both install routes, and the fastest way to make compliant wrap files.
Every requirement below is what TSLWrap's Export Design button produces by default — design or pick a wrap in the free 3D studio and the download is Paint Shop-ready, correctly named, with no account needed.
Paint Shop image requirements
- Format: PNG, 8-bit, sRGB color space
- Resolution: exactly 1024 × 1024 pixels, square
- File size: under 1 MB — larger files may be rejected
- Transparency: supported, for partial-coverage designs
- Filename: keep it simple — TSLWrap names exports correctly for the Wraps folder
Install route 1 — Tesla mobile app
Open the Tesla app (version 4.59 or newer), go to Creations → Wrap → Upload, and pick your PNG. The design syncs to the car, then appears in Toybox → Paint Shop, where you apply it. This is the quickest route and needs no hardware — if your PNG meets the requirements above, it just works.
Install route 2 — USB drive
Copy the PNG onto a USB drive inside a folder named exactly Wraps (capital W), following the folder naming convention Tesla publishes on its custom-wraps GitHub page. Plug the drive into the car, open Toybox → Paint Shop, and select the design. The USB route is handy for files you want to keep on hand in the vehicle.

Frequently asked questions
- What is Tesla Paint Shop?
- Paint Shop is a Toybox feature that applies custom wrap images to the car. You upload a design as a PNG — via the Tesla app or a USB drive — and apply it in Toybox → Paint Shop in the vehicle.
- What image format does Tesla Paint Shop need?
- A square 1024×1024 pixel PNG, 8-bit sRGB, under 1 MB. Transparency is supported for partial designs. TSLWrap's export produces exactly this format.
- Which Tesla app version supports wrap upload?
- App 4.59 or newer, via Creations → Wrap → Upload. Older app versions don't have the Creations upload path.
- Why was my wrap rejected by Paint Shop?
- Almost always the file: wrong resolution, not a square PNG, or over 1 MB. Re-export from TSLWrap and it will meet every requirement.
- Does a Paint Shop wrap change the physical car?
- No — Paint Shop wraps are digital designs shown by the vehicle. For a physical change you need a vinyl wrap from an installer; the same design file works as a brief.
- Is there a size limit for the Wraps USB folder?
- Each file should stay under 1 MB per the Paint Shop spec; a normal USB drive holds far more designs than the car will ever need.
